THE FALLS ON A BIRTHED RIVER

SSEZIBWA FALLS

If you love Nature with beautiful sceneries, a bit of culture and history while in Uganda, Ssezibwa falls are a perfect place to visit.

The magnificent falls are located in Mukono district situated only 32km(20mi) on the Kampala-Jinja highway and about 1.5km off the Kampala-Jinja highway. The falls are found on R. Ssezibwa.

The calm river emerges from the thicket wetlands between L. Victoria and L. Kyoga, west of Victoria Nile in Buikwe district northwards through Mukono district into Lake kyoga in Kayunga district which then stambles over the sharp rocks and plunges into a whirlpool 7 meters below before continuing on a very calm course.

Sezibwa falls is captivatingly formed with its natural beauty and exciting nature of adventures and cultural experiences. The lush green environment, an impressive birdlife and wildlife, beautiful rocks, with a peaceful surrounding and cool atmosphere with a nearby forest endowed with big eucalyptus trees, bamboo, thickets, harboring plenty of birds, butterflies and some monkeys. In the waters of the river, Otters and tadpoles can be sighted.

The falls preserve an ancient African culture and has for ages been a site of traditional cultural rituals for traditional believers. It’s known for being a Buganda cultural Heritage site. It provides you with a very good experience of the believed cultural rituals of the gods/spirits that people believe in to provide them with  things like riches, rain, families marriages etc.…

According to the Baganda legends, hundreds of years ago, a woman called Nakangu; from the fox clan was expected to give birth to a set of twins but instead gave birth to two rivers- two streams. The local tradition believes that the spirits of Nakangu’s unborn twins Ssezibwa and Mobeya still live on and inhabit the waters of the river.

The two rivers flow past the peaceful Island that separates them into two streams, which is the basis of the legend above and how the rivers came to be.
