Day 1: Kampala – Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

The tour begins with an early breakfast before guests are picked up from their accommodation for the long westward drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The journey covers roughly 450 kilometers and takes approximately eight hours in total, broken up by two notable stops.

Stop 1 – The Equator: Travelers pause at the Equator line for a toilet break, the well-known water experiment demonstrating the Coriolis effect on either side of the line, and time to browse local craft stalls for souvenirs.

Stop 2 – Mbarara: A second stop follows in Mbarara for lunch, typically at the Igongo Cultural Center or Agip Motel, both popular waypoints for travelers heading toward southwestern Uganda.

From Mbarara, the drive continues through the scenic rolling hills of Mbarara and Kabale districts en route to the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park — home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. Guests arrive at the park in the evening and check in to Trekkers’ Tarvan Cottages, where dinner and an overnight stay complete the day.

Day 2: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Day two is the heart of the safari. Guests wake to sweeping views of the sunrise breaking over the misty canopy of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, one of the most atmospheric settings in East Africa. Breakfast is served around 7:00 a.m., after which guests collect their packed lunches and head to the park offices for registration and a pre-trek briefing from park rangers.

The briefing covers trekking etiquette, safety guidelines, and what to expect once gorilla families are located — including maintaining a respectful distance, keeping noise to a minimum, and following ranger instructions at all times.

Following the briefing, groups set off into the forest for the day’s central activity: gorilla trekking. This is a physically engaging experience. Trails wind through dense, often muddy vegetation and can involve climbing steep, uneven terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy footwear are recommended. Because mountain gorillas are wild and constantly on the move, there is no fixed schedule for how long the trek will take.

Several factors influence gorilla movement on any given day, including:

• Food availability — gorillas travel between favored fruiting trees and feeding grounds
• Social dynamics — interactions with neighboring gorilla groups can shift a family’s location
• Terrain and weather — rainfall and slope conditions affect both gorilla and human movement

On average, the trekking portion of the day takes between two and eight hours, depending on how far the trackers must travel to locate a habituated gorilla family. Once found, visitors are typically permitted about one hour in the presence of the gorillas — an unforgettable opportunity to observe their behavior, family interactions, and daily routines at close range.

After the encounter, the group returns to the lodge to rest and recover. The evening is left free to relax before dinner and a second overnight stay at Trekkers’ Tarvan Cottages.

Day 2 Overview:

• Sunrise views over Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
• Breakfast at approximately 7:00 a.m.
• Registration and briefing at park headquarters
• Gorilla trekking activity (2–8 hours, terrain and duration vary)
• Approximately one hour observing a habituated gorilla family
• Return to lodge, dinner, and overnight at Trekkers’ Tarvan Cottages

Day 3: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest – Kampala / Entebbe

The final day begins with breakfast at the lodge before departing Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for the return journey to Kampala. The route retraces the scenic path through the rolling hills and countryside of southwestern Uganda, with scheduled stops in Kabale and Mbarara for refreshments, comfort breaks, and lunch along the way.

A final stop is made at the Equator, giving travelers a last opportunity to enjoy the water experiment, take photographs, and browse the craft shops for any remaining souvenirs.

From there, the journey continues to Entebbe, where guests are either transferred to their accommodation for an overnight stay or driven directly to Entebbe International Airport in time for their departing flight — bringing the safari to a close.

Day 3 Overview:

• Breakfast at the lodge and departure from Bwindi
• Scenic return drive with stops in Kabale and Mbarara
• Final Equator stop for photos and souvenirs
• Transfer to Entebbe accommodation or Entebbe International Airport

Practical Tips for Gorilla Trekking

Because Day 2 is physically demanding, a little preparation goes a long way:

• Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support are essential, as trails are frequently muddy and uneven.
• Clothing: Long sleeves and long trousers help protect against nettles, thorny vegetation, and biting insects; a rain jacket is advisable given the forest’s unpredictable weather.
• Gear: Gardening gloves are useful for gripping vegetation on steep sections, and a walking stick (often available for hire at the park) can help with balance.
• Fitness: While no extreme fitness level is required, being reasonably active makes the steep, sometimes multi-hour trek more comfortable.
• Porters: Hiring a local porter is encouraged — it supports the local community and provides extra help carrying gear over difficult terrain.
• Permits: Gorilla trekking permits are limited and allocated per gorilla family group, so early booking is strongly recommended, especially during Uganda’s peak travel seasons.
