Day Two: Transfer to Kibale National Park – May 12, 2026.

After breakfast, set out from Uganda’s vibrant capital, Kampala, on a scenic journey westward toward Kibale National Park, home to the highest density of primates in Africa. This area is renowned for its rolling tea plantations, where neatly trimmed green rows create striking patterns across the hillsides.

Along the way, enjoy a packed lunch while passing through the Crater Lakes region, an area dotted with picturesque volcanic lakes surrounded by forest and farmland. These serene waters, remnants of ancient geological activity, add a captivating backdrop to the final leg of your drive.

Day Three: Chimpanzee Trekking & Bigodi Swamp Walk – May 13, 2026.

After an early breakfast, head into Kibale National Park, often celebrated for having the highest diversity of primates in East Africa. This lush tropical rainforest is home to more than a dozen primate species, including the playful black-and-white colobus monkeys, the agile red-tailed monkeys, and the rare grey-cheeked mangabey. The highlight of the morning is your chimpanzee trekking adventure, led by experienced guides who track the chimps by their calls and movements through the forest canopy. Once located, you’ll spend up to an hour observing them as they feed, groom, and interact—a fascinating glimpse into the complex social lives of our closest relatives.

Return to the lodge for a relaxing lunch, then in the afternoon set out for a guided nature walk in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary. This community-run conservation area is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 200 recorded species including the great blue turaco and papyrus gonolek. After breakfast at your lodge, you make your way to the Kinigi headquarters of Volcanoes National Park, where you will receive a detailed briefing from Rwanda Development Board rangers. This morning is dedicated to tracking the endangered golden monkeys, an activity that offers a lighter yet equally rewarding forest experience compared to gorilla trekking.

Accompanied by skilled guides, you venture into the dense bamboo zones where these playful primates thrive. Their bright golden-orange fur stands out vividly against the green forest backdrop, and you may watch them leaping between branches, feeding on bamboo shoots, and interacting in lively social groups. The duration of the trek varies depending on the monkeys’ movements that day, but it often provides excellent photographic opportunities in the soft, filtered light of the forest canopy.

Following the trek, you set off on a scenic drive toward Kibuye, a peaceful lakeside town along the shores of Lake Kivu. Rolling hills, coffee plantations, and panoramic lake views accompany your journey. Upon arrival, check in to your accommodation and take some time to relax before dinner.
