Overview:
Mgahinga Gorilla national park is located in south western Uganda bordering Rwanda to the south and Congo to the west. It is 15 kilometers from kisoro. It is 33 square kilometers and the altitude ranges between 2227 meters – 4127 meters. The park was declared a game sanctuary by the British administration in 1930 and gazette as a national park in 1991. It was created to protect the rare mountain gorillas that inhabit it’s dense forests.
It has 3 forested slopes of extinct volcanoes. The virunga volcanoes dominate the landscape and are a home to large variety of wildlife including the endangered mountain gorillas. The park is a great biological importance because in bad climatic conditions it acts as a refugee to plants and animals due to its protective vegetation cover. It has numerous streams flowing northwards from mountains. It’s plains are characterized by deep volcanic ash running from the mountains and rapidly disappears underground. It has a crater lake on Mountain Muhabura and a swamp crater on mountain Gahinga summit.
Vegetation:
The park sits on the ream of Albertine Rift Valley and the vegetation consists of wood land, bamboo and only a small area of pure montane forest still remains at the base of mountain Muhabura.

Mgahinga Gorilla national park is home to an impressive diversity of wildlife, with about 89 mammal species recorded within its boundaries. Among its most celebrated residents are the Mountain Gorillas, which draw travelers from around the world for a once-in-a-lifetime trekking experience. The park also shelters a range of other remarkable species, including elephants, buffalo, spotted hyena, golden cat, side-striped jackal, giant forest hog, black-fronted duiker, and bushbuck, creating a rich and varied ecosystem.
One of the distinctive advantages of Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga, compared to neighboring Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is the vegetation. The forest cover here is less dense, allowing for relatively easier treks and often clearer views of the gorilla families once they are located. This accessibility, combined with the dramatic backdrop of the Virunga Volcanoes, makes gorilla encounters in Mgahinga a truly memorable and intimate experience.
Gorilla trekking:
Gorilla trekking is the signature experience of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and one of the most thrilling wildlife encounters in Africa. The duration of a trek is never fixed, as it depends on the movements of the gorilla family that day—often influenced by the availability of food and the social interactions within the group. This unpredictability adds to the sense of adventure, as each trek is unique.
Along the way, knowledgeable Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guides accompany you, sharing insights into the gorillas’ behavior, ecology, communication patterns, and feeding habits. Their expertise not only ensures safety but also deepens your understanding of these gentle giants and the fragile ecosystems they inhabit.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is home to a single habituated gorilla group, the Nyakagezi family, which is open to visitors. The other families in the park are reserved for ongoing research and conservation efforts. Trekking to see Nyakagezi offers a rare and intimate experience, set against the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Virunga range.
Birding.
Mgahinga Gorilla national park is a rewarding destination for bird enthusiasts, with more than 115 recorded species, including 14 Albertine Rift endemics that are highly sought after by keen birders. The park has gained recognition for sightings of some of the region’s rarest species, and notably, it was the most recent recorded site of the elusive Shelley’s Crimsonwing just a few years ago.
The most memorable birding experiences unfold against the park’s dramatic volcanic scenery. The gorge between Mount Gahinga and Mount Sabyinyo offers excellent opportunities, as trails pass through stands of bamboo and lush montane forest. Here, birders may encounter the striking Rwenzori turaco, alongside a variety of other colorful species that thrive in these habitats.
With its combination of unique endemics, rare species, and spectacular landscapes, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is considered one of the prime birding spots in Uganda, appealing both to serious ornithologists and to travelers who simply enjoy the beauty of forest birds in their natural environment.
Cultural encounters:
Before the establishment of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the dense forests were home to the Batwa people – hunter-gatherers often referred to as pygmies. For generations, they lived in harmony with the forest, relying on it for food, medicine, and shelter, while also developing a reputation as skilled warriors.
Today, the Batwa share their rich cultural heritage with visitors through guided experiences that bring their history to life. On these cultural encounters, Batwa elders lead you along trails once used in their daily lives, demonstrating traditional survival skills such as hunting techniques, gathering wild plants, and using the forest’s natural resources for healing.
The experience often culminates at Garama Cave, a historic site that once served as a shelter and meeting place for the Batwa. Now open to visitors, the cave is reached via two scenic trails, offering not only cultural insight but also an evocative sense of connection to the people who once called this forest home.
Mountain Climbing, Hiking and nature walks:
Apart from Gorilla trekking activities done in this park, there also other tourism activities offered in this park. There are 3 challenging mountain peaks to climb and these include Mountain Sabyinyo (366 meters), Mountain Gahinga which goes through a good example of pure bamboo forest. Mountain Muhavura which provides best views of the country.
Once on the top, hikers are rewarded with the views of the Virunga volcanoes, Lake Edward in Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi national park and the peaks of Rwenzori Mountains. Mountain climbing is carried out to the top of Mountain Muhabura, Mountain Gahinga and Mountain Sabinyo. There are also nature walks carried out on the foothills of these volcanoes and gives visitors chance to spot forest birds, wild vegetation, bamboo forests, lakes and good view of the agricultural villages.
Accommodation:
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers a range of accommodation options to suit different preferences and budgets. At the park entrance, you will find the community-run Mgahinga Community Campground (Majambere Camp), which provides simple traditional bandas and basic camping facilities. While modest, staying here offers visitors a chance to support local initiatives and connect with the surrounding community.
For those seeking more comfort and exclusivity, the Mount Gahinga Lodge, located just a short distance—about 50 meters—from the park entrance, provides a high-end experience with beautifully designed cottages, warm hospitality, and sweeping views of the Virunga Volcanoes.

ACCESSIBILITY:
Accessibility by Road
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park lies approximately 510 kilometers west of Kampala, making it an accessible yet scenic journey through Uganda’s southwestern highlands. The most commonly traveled route takes you via Kabale and on to Kisoro. The drive from Kampala to Kabale, covering about 434 kilometers, typically takes around seven hours, though travel time can vary depending on traffic conditions.
From Kabale, the road continues for 76 kilometers to Kisoro, following a winding but well-paved mountainous route that offers breathtaking views of terraced hillsides and lush valleys. From Kisoro town, it is a further 15 kilometers to the main entrance of the park. This final stretch is along a dirt road with some steep and rocky sections, requiring careful navigation, but it rewards travelers with a sense of adventure as they draw closer to the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Virunga range.
Accessibility by Air
For those seeking a faster and more convenient option, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park can also be reached by air. Daily scheduled flights operate from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airstrip, located just a short drive from the park.
