Over nearly a month, the journey traverses mist-shrouded rainforests, sweeping savannas, remote valleys, and tranquil wetlands, uncovering the full breadth of Uganda’s natural beauty.
From the shores of Lake Victoria to the towering canopy of Kibale Forest, from the ancient gorilla-clad slopes of Bwindi and Mgahinga to the untamed reaches of Kidepo and Pian Upe, every day brings fresh discoveries. The trip blends intensive birding — with opportunities to log hundreds of species, including the Albertine Rift endemic Fox’s Weaver and rarities like the Shoebill Stork — with unforgettable wildlife encounters, from tracking chimpanzees and mountain gorillas to watching tree-climbing lions and herds of elephant and buffalo.

Itinerary at a Glance
Days 1–3: Entebbe, Mabamba Wetland & Lake Mburo National Park The safari opens at Entebbe International Airport with a transfer to 2 Friends Beach Hotel on Lake Victoria, with an optional visit to the historic Entebbe Botanical Gardens. Day 2 heads to Mabamba Wetland Sanctuary, where a canoe glide through papyrus channels delivers close views of the Shoebill Stork alongside African and Lesser Jacanas, Malachite Kingfishers, and Purple Swamphens, before continuing to Lake Mburo National Park. Two full days here combine game drives for zebra, eland, buffalo, and impala with a boat cruise on Lake Mburo for hippos, crocodiles, and African Finfoot. Overnights: 2 Friends Beach Hotel, then Rwakobo Rock.
Days 4–9: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Ruhija & Buhoma) The route continues southwest into the Kigezi Highlands to Ruhija, Bwindi’s high-altitude birding hub. The Mubwindi Swamp Trail — a descent through montane forest to open swamp — is prime territory for Albertine Rift endemics such as Grauer’s Broadbill, Grauer’s Rush Warbler, and Archer’s Robin-Chat, alongside Rwenzori and Purple-breasted Sunbirds and Great Blue Turaco. Day 6 is dedicated to gorilla trekking, a two-to-eight-hour trek to spend one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. A further birding day covers Ruhija’s main trails before the group transfers through Bwindi’s birding-rich “Neck” to Buhoma, where the Waterfall Trail and a community farm walk add species like the Bar-tailed Trogon, Red-chested Owlet, and Rufous-chested Flufftail. Overnights: Trekkers’ Tavern Cottages (Ruhija), then Gorilla Friends Camp (Buhoma).
Days 10–13: Queen Elizabeth National Park (Ishasha & Mweya) From Buhoma, the safari heads to the Ishasha Sector, famous for tree-climbing lions draped across fig branches, with game and birding drives revealing Brown-chested Lapwing and a range of snake-eagles. The route continues along the Kazinga Channel to Mweya, where the Kasenyi Plains yield kob, buffalo, hyena, and lion alongside bustards, coursers, and cisticolas, and a Kazinga Channel boat cruise brings elephants, hippos, and dense waterbird activity — kingfishers, pelicans, African Skimmers, and saddle-billed storks. A day in Maramagambo Forest adds primates, forest birds, and a visit to the Bat Cave. Overnights: Ishasha Topi Lodge, then Queen Elizabeth Bush Lodge.
Days 14–16: Kibale Forest National Park Traveling north past the Crater Lakes and the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, the safari reaches Kibale, home to 13 primate species. Chimpanzee trekking is the centerpiece, with strong odds for Green-breasted Pitta and Black-and-white Shrike-flycatcher along the trails, followed by an afternoon at the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for Great Blue Turaco and Collared Sunbird. A further day explores Kibale’s main road and the Kanyanchu area for sunbirds, tinkerbirds, and mixed greenbul flocks. Overnight: Guereza Canopy Lodge.
Days 17–19: Masindi & Budongo Forest (The Royal Mile) The route continues to Masindi, gateway to Budongo Forest. The Royal Mile — a wide former royal hunting trail — is one of Uganda’s premier birding sites, delivering Jameson’s and Chestnut Wattle-eyes, Puvel’s Illadopsis, Narina Trogon, Chocolate-backed and Dwarf Kingfishers, and White-thighed and Black-and-white Casqued Hornbills. From Masindi, the safari enters Murchison Falls National Park via Kaniyo Pabidi, adding Fire-crested Alethe, before viewing the thunderous Murchison Falls itself, where the Nile forces through a seven-meter gorge. Overnights: Masindi Hotel, then Pakuba Safari Lodge.
Days 20–21: Murchison Falls National Park A full day in the park’s Delta sector combines a morning game drive — elephant, giraffe, lion, leopard — with an afternoon Nile boat cruise past hippos, crocodiles, Goliath Herons, Giant Kingfishers, and the chance of a Pel’s Fishing Owl. The safari then exits north through Gulu and Kitgum toward Kidepo, birding en route for Rufous Chatterer and Fox Kestrel as the landscape turns to dry northern plains. Overnight: Kidepo Savannah Lodge.
Days 22–24: Kidepo Valley National Park Three days explore one of Africa’s most remote parks. The Narus Valley delivers Swallow-tailed Kite, Kori and Black-bellied Bustards, and starling flocks alongside buffalo, zebra, and elephant, while the arid Kidepo Valley sector adds Black-breasted and D’Arnaud’s Barbets, Pygmy Falcon, and Verreaux’s Eagle. A guided walking safari with an armed ranger offers a slower-paced, track-and-call approach to the park’s wildlife. Overnight: Kidepo Savannah Lodge.
Days 25–26: Pian Upe Game Reserve Traveling south through the Karamoja region via Kaabong, Kotido, Moroto, and Nakapiripirit, the route is a key stretch for Uganda’s only endemic bird, the Fox’s Weaver, alongside Abyssinian Scimitarbill and Purple Grenadier. Two days in Pian Upe — one of Uganda’s largest, least-visited reserves — add Quail-plover, Clapperton’s and Ring-necked Francolin, and raptors including Martial Eagle and Fox Kestrel. Overnight: UWA Bandas, Pian Upe.
Days 27–28: Jinja & Departure The final leg travels south to Jinja for a relaxed overnight at Nile Haven, followed by a visit to the Source of the Nile and the roaring Itanda Falls before the return transfer to Entebbe for departure, with time permitting for a stop at the craft markets. Overnight: Nile Haven, Jinja.
