Murchison Falls national park protect an area of about 3893 square kilometers and was first protected in the 1920s as Kabalega, Bugungu and Karuma game reserves. The local name for this park is Kabalega national park and before being gazetted as a national park, it used to be a hunting ground for the King of Bunyoro.
