Explore Kenya’s Tsavo National Park
Tsavo is made up of two separate parks, Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park. Located in Coast Province of Kenya in between Nairobi City and Mombasa. Tsavo is nearly 22,000km2, being the largest national park in Kenya and one of the largest in the world. The park was split into two due to the railway going from Mombasa to the interior of Kenya.
Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest and largest parks in Kenya at 13,747 square kilometers. Situated in a semi-arid area previously known as the Taru desert, It opened in April 1948, and is located near the town of Voi in the Taita-Taveta County of the former Coast Province. Tsavo West National Park is located in the Coast Province of Kenya. The park covers an area of 9,065 square kilometers. The A109 road Nairobi-Mombasa and a railway divide it from the adjoining Tsavo East National Park. Together with adjoining ranches and protected areas, they comprise the Tsavo Conservation Area. Tsavo West is a more popular destination on account of its magnificent scenery, Mzima Springs, rich and varied wildlife, good road system, rhino reserve, rock climbing potential and guided walks along the Tsavo River. The park is operated by Kenya Wildlife Service and its home to most of the larger mammals, vast herds of dust –red elephant, Rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, and pods of hippo, crocodile, and waterbucks, Lesser Kudu, Gerenuk and Hirola. The prolific bird life features 500 recorded species. Some of the popular destinations within the park include Mudanda Rock, where hundreds of elephants and other wildlife come to drink during the dry season. You can view a variety of animals here including buffalo, lions, leopards, rhinos and zebras. You will also observe large herds of Tsavo’s famous red elephants. There are also about 500 species of birds, including the ostrich, and migratory birds like kestrels and buzzards.
At Tsavo west you can explore the Shetani Lava Flow, the enormous variety of wildlife and over 600 species of birds have been recorded here. The park also offers excellent and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
