The Uganda Museum

The Uganda Museum is found in Kampala, Uganda. It displays and exhibits ethnological, natural-historical and traditional life collections of Uganda’s cultural heritage. The museum was founded in 1908, after Governor George Wilson called for “all articles of interest” on Uganda to be procured.  Among the collections in the Uganda Museum are; playable musical instruments, hunting equipment, weaponry, archaeology and entomology. It is the oldest museum in east Africa and is a vivid reminder of the country’s colorful past which are a must visit and see. It was started in the 1930’s by a group of scholars, and the collection is comprised of approximately 3,000 volumes, maps, periodicals and photographs, all pertaining to African history, culture, sociology, travel and science. In addition to its collection, the library houses the books of the East African Wildlife Society and a number of books from the museum which were given to the society’s care some years ago. This means that the Uganda society’s library is in one room of the Uganda national museum. Additionally other things to see include photos, calendars, posters with images of different Ugandan geographical features, animals, birds and insects displayed behind the reception desk. Right inside are different sections of the museum including the independence pavilion of science and technology, musical instruments section, the Stone Age gallery, history and Iron Age display, traditional life gallery, the natural history center and the paleontology center. Your tour will become more colorful once you see displays of traditional clothing (backcloth and animal skin), headdress, hair dressing, as well as hunting, the history of transportation, fishing, agriculture, war, religion, and how ancestors spent their free time. The tools used by Stone Age people include stones, bones, or skulls which were used for cutting, scraping and chipping. Interestingly tribes are gathered all over Uganda in one house which has made the museum a favorite stop for tourists and school children since the history they learn theoretically gets practical explanation at the museum. You will be able to see and learn about Uganda’s lakes, rivers, fish, insects, reptiles, and bird species like the woodpecker, hornbill, secretary bird, pennant wing, nightjar, sunbird, skimmer, darter, Lilly-trotter, and the black winged stilt and some are presented in form of fossilized bones, plants or skeletons. Another interesting part are the paintings of early man and traditional architecture and the latest addition of fossil material from the albert tine region that helps one to understand the history of Uganda’s geology, animals, environment and climatic changes. . Visiting the museum is a worthwhile journey as visitors will enjoy a group of players, who play the instruments and dance for them.  Those who undertake it, surely benefit from it.
