Sustainable tourism in Uganda

Sustainable tourism refers to tourism that meets the needs of present tourists and host destinations while protecting and enhancing opportunities for the future. Thus management of resources through fulfilling economic, social and aesthetic needs while maintaining cultural Integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity, and life support systems”. Uganda has achieved sustainable tourism in one way or the other for purposes of reducing poverty levels and creating awareness about sustainable tourism to the communities in order to inform them about the benefits of tourism development in the country. This therefore helps in controlling the effects of the local community to the environment. This is mainly emphasized in engaging in Eco-tourism in destinations like national parks, forests and reserves. Sustainable tourism in Uganda is one of the factors which have helped to increase Uganda safaris to Uganda. The Ugandan government has greatly helped in putting in place many policies which have helped in promoting sustainable tourism in Uganda. These policies include; the millennium development goals (MDGs), promoting good environmental practices, engaging the communities in sustainable tourism development and limiting damage by the tourists.

IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

  • Sustainable tourism helps in enhancing regional integration in Uganda and to the outside world and also improves regional destination competitiveness among the countries of East Africa. This leads to increased tourist flows in Uganda and thus marketing it internationally.
  • Sustainable tourism helps in protecting and conserving the environment which helps in maintaining the natural habitants of the animals and also the plant species which are enjoyed by the tourists who come for Uganda safaris especially those interested in nature and wildlife.
  • Sustainable tourism helps in realizing the tourism potentials in the country and also shows how these potentials can be well preserved and conserved in order to protect and conserve the environment. This helps to improve safari visits since the main challenges to tourism development can be well addressed in order to enhance competitiveness of the country to the outside world.
  • Sustainable tourism also helps in providing knowledge about the status of tourism development in Uganda. This helps the policy makers and the stakeholders of tourism to strategies towards the enhancement of the policy of sustainable tourism development in the country. This helps to promote and market the tourism sector to the outside world hence encouraging more tourists to come for safaris to Uganda.
  • Tourism industry, as one of the fastest growing industries in the world, has significant impacts on natural resources, consumption patterns, pollution and socio-economic systems. Sustainable tourism makes minimal impacts on the environment and local culture, while contributing to overall development by helping to generate future employment for local people and bringing a positive experience also for tourism companies and the tourists themselves.

Today organizations like Africa Sustainable Tourism Care Foundation have come up to promote sustainable tourism  enhancing the capacity of local people across the tourism focal district of Uganda to harness and realize the tourism potential within their midst, leading to improved livelihoods.  The focus is mainly on empowering women through homestead tourism, handicraft production, and rural hospitality in order to sustain village life and culture, improve livelihoods, empowers rural women and youth with skills training, connects them to global market opportunities, and enables them to earn an income to transform their communities in remote rural areas and reduce the need for outward migration. This therefore is promoting sustainable tourism.

Engaging the local communities in conserving the environment helps in promoting sustainable tourism. Once the management decides to involve the local people in tourism development, it helps in informing the local people that they are also part of the practice of developing tourism hence conserving and preserving the environment and its resources for tourism development. This therefore helps in attracting more tourists to come for safaris in Uganda.

Conclusively the tourism sector in Uganda has been affected by many environmental challenges but however, sustainable tourism enhancement helps in overcoming such problems which are affecting the tourism sector, this therefore helps in improving the environment and also to increasing the safaris to Uganda. Once sustainable tourism is enforced in Uganda, more tourists will be encouraged to visit to Uganda which will help in developing the tourism sector.
