Conservation and Tourism Products in Uganda:
Over the years now, tourism has proved to be Uganda’s main foreign exchange earner. This provides employment to a good percentage of the nation’s population. Hence cubing down the unemployment problem in the Country. Winston Churchill described Uganda as a fairy tale land, calling it the “Pearl of Africa”.
The ancient kingdoms of Buganda, Bunyoro, Busoga and Ankole flourished long before the European explorers arrived in Uganda. They followed the World’s longest river down stream to Uganda, looking for the source of the Nile. During the colonial times it was regarded as the most beautiful and potentially the richest country in East Africa.
How does political stability affect the growth of tourism in Uganda?
Now, after many years of civil turbulence under Idi Amin and Milton Obote, Uganda has settled down once more. In the 1970s when Idi Amin was the President of Uganda, there was instability in many part of the Country. The leadership did not do much to settle down the insurgence, which led to communities hunting the wildlife freely. This also led to the downfall of conservation, whereby much of the wildlife were hunted and some of them to extinction. We thank God who helped with the change of governance, hence restoring stability of our motherland Uganda.
After peace and stability was brought back home, conservation activities were restored. The Government started sensitizing the local communities, especially those near the parks, about the importance of conservation. This has happened under the rule of president Museveni and has rebuilt it’s important tourism industry. Uganda is indeed a beautiful country: a green and fertile land of high plateaus, luxuriant tropical forests, papyrus –swamps. This is also where the bizarre and endangered shoebill can still be found.
Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Conservation in Uganda:
Mountain Gorillas in Uganda, have been under protection by the Forestry department since the 1920s. This was changed in the 1990s when Bwindi forest and Mgahinga forest were gazetted as national park. They were given to the management of the national wildlife body, the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Uganda is home to more than half of the World’s remaining mountain gorilla population in Bwindi and Mgahinga National park.
The open plains of Murchison falls and Queen Elizabeth National park are the best for game viewing. This is because they flourish with antelopes, buffalo and elephants. These breathtaking wildlife can be watched against a back drop of the mysterious Rwenzori Mountain ranges. The great forest of Kibale is home to thousands of chimpanzees as well as well as birds. Bwindi Impenetrable forest, the home to the mighty mountain Gorillas, also known to be the number one birding spot in Africa.

A Truely Exceptional Uganda Experience and Guide.
Bruce K Bruce K 3 contributions A Truly Exceptional Uganda Experience and Guide Aug 2023 • Couples My wife and I recently returned from a wonderful 28-day combined birding and wildlife safari in Uganda led by our very talented tour guide, Paul, who is the owner of Terrain Safaris. If you are someone who loves nature, seeing wild life amidst breathtaking scenery, having unforgettable once-in-a-lifetime experiences like gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, then this is the dream trip you need to take. And if you have an interest in birding, as we do, then prepare to be more spoiled by the variety and number of species of birds that you will have the opportunity to see. There are about 1,000 different species of bird that can be seen in Uganda, and in our 4 weeks, we were able to see almost 500 different species. Every aspect of our trip was well planned. The lodges where we stayed ranged from clean basic accommodations to relatively plush lodges located in very scenic settings, based on what was available in the locations where we were touring. We traveled in a Toyota Land Cruiser competently driven by our guide Paul. As is common in many African countries, many of the roads were unpaved dirt roads, so we were treated to the well-known "African Massage" that these dirt roads provided. Paul is a talented knowledgeable guide in all respects. He is a calm, interesting, and very likeable person with a good sense of humor. As a birding guide, he is exceptional, with the ability to recognize almost 1,000 different species of birds by their calls alone, and to then quickly locate them even in densely vegetated habitats. Perhaps the best compliment that I can give Paul is to say that as great as he is as a birding guide, he is even a greater person. Obviously, we loved our unforgettable journey to Uganda, and we want to thank Paul and his company for making all of it possible.
