Tapping into the Chinese Tourism Market: A Successful 13-Day Safari Across East Africa
At Terrain Safaris, we are proud to have successfully concluded a memorable 13-day gorilla and wildlife safari with a group of Chinese tourists – an exciting journey that took us through Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi. This experience not only strengthened cultural exchange but also confirmed a growing truth within the African tourism industry: the Chinese market is becoming one of the most promising segments for inbound tourism in East Africa.
Over the course of nearly two weeks, our Chinese guests explored some of the most celebrated natural attractions in the region – from the breathtaking gorilla trekking adventures in Uganda and Rwanda to the diverse wildlife encounters and rich cultural experiences found throughout East Africa. Their positive feedback, excitement, and emotional connection to the region were truly inspiring. Many expressed that the safari exceeded their expectations and assured us that they would happily recommend East Africa—and Terrain Safaris—to friends, family, and fellow travelers back home.
The memories they gathered—whether standing face-to-face with a family of mountain gorillas, sharing a cultural dance experience with local communities, or marveling at the landscapes of the Great Rift Valley—are stories they will carry with them for a lifetime. And that is the kind of impact that fuels our passion for what we do.
Why the Chinese Tourism Market Matters
With China now one of the world’s largest sources of outbound tourists, tapping into this market presents a major opportunity for East African tourism operators. Chinese travelers are increasingly seeking authentic, nature-based, and experience-driven itineraries—making East Africa a perfect destination for adventure, wildlife, and cultural immersion.
As tourism trends continue to shift from mass travel to personalized travel, East Africa is well positioned to welcome more Chinese visitors who are eager to explore beyond the traditional travel circuits.

Our clients after the highlight of our safari “Gorilla trekking” at Bwindi forest national park.
After the Gorilla trekking activity at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest national park, we thought a group picture would be an ideal souvenir to carry home for our clients’ fond memories.
Having lunch at Huye (Butare), Rwanda and at Bujumbura, Burundi, was also part of the experience. Both our tour guides and the clients enjoyed spending time together, sharing cultural norms, traditions and beliefs from both China and Africa and realized how closely related we are from each other.
