Keepers for the day programme( A unique experience at Uganda wildlife education centre)
The Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) is located along the shoreline in Entebbe. Today, UWEC undertakes several conservation initiatives in Uganda including wildlife rescue and rehabilitation; fully fledged veterinary hospital services; and captive breeding of endangered species of the area. UWEC furthermore contributes to scientific research and is committed to develop education program mes for the general public, with particular emphasis on instilling a conversation ethic and engaging young people. At the center is this spectacular activity available called the keepers for the day program where visitors engage in the day today activities of taking care of animals. It involves waking up early to serve them breakfast, joining the UWEC keepers in the kitchen to prepare food, get to the tractor which moves from one exhibit to another help feed a number of exotic and endangered animals including giraffes lions and to rare birds. Visitors get a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes and participate in recording of animal behavior or even get a chance to perform checks and help feed and rehabilitate a rescued animal. This is the most rewarding and fulfilling activity any one should not miss.
In addition, UWEC gives visitors a tour filled with exciting insight. They benefit from keeper guides experience and get the full lowdown on the individual animals and their little quirks. One enjoys hearing a full story of the orphaned chimpanzee and find out why it is so hard to feed a 4-month old elephant. You will enjoy the way the guides communicate with the rhino over the fence and learn facts and stories about these animals that are unforgettable. This is really amazing, memorable and a life time experience.
Health Requirements for Uganda Wildlife Education Center keeper for the Activities.
The following vaccinations and health checks are mandatory for an individual to participate in the Keeper for a Day program. The vaccinations required executed at least two weeks before participation in the programme are;
- Hepatitis A (20 years)
- Hepatitis B (5 years)
- Measles (MMR) (10 – 15 years)
- Meningococcal meningitis (ACWY strains) (3 years)
- Polio (10 years)
- Tetanus (10 years) vaccine
- Negative TB test or x ray is also required.
Cold or flu incidences should be communicated earlier in the last 48 hours as this could affect your interaction with the animals.
