Have A Memorable Experience With The Ngorongoro Crater Safari – Terrain Safaris Uganda

The Ngorongoro crater is the world’s only intact caldera 610metres (2000 feet) deep and covers 260square kilometers (100sq. meters) found in northern Tanzania in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It was declared a UNESCO heritage site in 1978. It is vast, volcanic and a home to the| Big 5 game (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhino). it is a breathtakingly beautiful setting with huge herds of wildebeest and zebras traverse its plains during their annual migration.  Taking on an Ngorongoro crater safari is nothing short of awe- inspiring. It is one of the world’s most astonishing and renowned natural wonders, and therefore worth a visit. It is one of the most beautiful natural wildlife safari sites in the world and an exceptional place to mingle and interact with the Masai tribe. Due to its popularity the place is always busy and therefore at terrain safaris (www.terrain-safaris.com) we recommend you to stay for a few days to closely see such wonderful wildlife and also visit the Serengeti for a quieter and have a more authentic safari experience and thus a wondrous treat.

The crater also harbors a good population of hyenas along with healthy herds of wildebeest, and zebras.  Other wildlife here includes; serval cat, cheetah, jackal, Grant’s and Thompson’s gazelle, flamingo and bat-eared foxes, as well as approximately 400 species of birds which also makes it a good birders spot.

There are activities one can engage in at this place although they are limited. These include; game driving on the crater, trekking, excursions to Olduvai Gorge and visiting the Masai and other tribes are done at the wider Ngorongoro Conservation Area.  However, getting out of the vehicle is strictly limited to these areas. Interestingly the wildlife mainly stays in the crater all year round and therefore one can visit any time of the year. The higher water levels in Lake Magadi (in the center of the crater) also result in higher concentrations of flamingos thus having a guaranteed excellent safari. The lake has no outlet and has a high salt content due to centuries of evaporation which gives the water color blue and therefore algae and crustaceans such as brine shrimp live in this water. They are food to millions of flamingos. Adjacent marshes offer mud pools to hippos, elephants, and black rhinos.

The Ngorogoro Crater is easily accessible. One can use a daily light aircraft flight to Arusha. The drive from Arusha is around 4hrs. The accommodation is supburb. You can either decide to stay on the crater rim or on the rift valley escarpment. There is a collection of lodges on the crater rim overlooking the floor with spectacular views and easy access to the crater. At the rift valley escarpment in an area known as karatu, the lodges and camps are less than about 20km from the crater. These include Gibbs farm, plantation lodge and the Ngorongoro farm house lodge are all good. Why not have a safari to this amazing place and am sure the experience is memorable.
