"4 Day Rwanda Primates/Gorilla Trekking Tour"
($4960 pp/2 pax)
Overview: Rwanda Gorilla Safari – 4 Days / 3 Nights
This unforgettable four-day journey through Rwanda offers an intimate and immersive encounter with one of the world’s most awe-inspiring wildlife experiences—tracking endangered mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Beginning in the country’s welcoming capital, Kigali, you’ll journey through the scenic highlands of northern Rwanda to the forested slopes of the Virunga Mountains, home to over one-third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.
Your adventure begins with a warm welcome upon arrival, followed by a picturesque drive to Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, nestled on the edge of the park. Here, you’ll enjoy two exhilarating days of gorilla trekking, each visit allowing you to track a different family group for broader insights and richer photographic opportunities. Led by experienced park rangers, these treks offer you the rare privilege of observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat—a humbling and emotional experience few travelers will ever forget.
In addition to wildlife, the journey also offers space for reflection and cultural exploration. From the moving exhibits at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which pays tribute to Rwanda’s difficult past, to an optional visit to the Gorilla Guardians Village—a vibrant community-based cultural experience—this itinerary balances adventure with meaningful encounters and context.
Your final night is spent at the historic Hotel Mille Collines, a symbol of Kigali’s resilience and charm. With seamless logistics, refined accommodations, and expertly guided experiences throughout, this safari offers a profound connection to Rwanda’s landscapes, wildlife, and spirit of renewal.
Day One: Arrival at Kanombe International Airport – Transfer to Volcanoes Gorilla Park
Upon arrival at Kanombe International Airport in Kigali, you will be welcomed by your dedicated driver-guide, a knowledgeable representative who will provide a warm introduction and a detailed briefing about the journey ahead. From here, set off on a scenic drive toward Volcanoes Forest National Park, nestled in Rwanda’s northern highlands.
The route winds through rolling hills and terraced landscapes, earning Rwanda its nickname as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Along the way, you’ll get your first impressions of the country’s pristine countryside, dotted with banana groves, tea plantations, and vibrant roadside villages. This scenic transfer offers a gentle immersion into the culture and natural beauty that define this region.
By afternoon, you’ll arrive at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, located on the foothills of the Virunga Mountains. This welcoming lodge provides expansive views of the surrounding volcanoes and offers an ideal base for gorilla trekking. With its rustic charm, spacious cottages, and proximity to the park, it blends comfort with authenticity.
Spend the remainder of your day at leisure—relax on your private veranda, enjoy the cool mountain air, or take a short walk around the grounds. In the evening, gather for a hearty dinner by the fireplace, as the sun sets over the volcanic peaks and anticipation builds for tomorrow’s extraordinary experience in the forest.

Day Two: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park.

After an early breakfast at the lodge, you’ll set out with your packed lunch and transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for a morning briefing. Here, experienced park rangers and trackers will provide essential information on gorilla behavior, trekking etiquette, and conservation efforts before assigning you to a specific gorilla family group based on your fitness level and interest.
Soon after, you begin your guided trek into the montane forests of the Virunga range, weaving through dense vegetation, bamboo groves, and mist-covered slopes. The duration of the trek varies depending on the gorillas’ movements, but the reward is immense. Encountering a family of wild mountain gorillas in their natural habitat—watching them feed, groom, and interact just a few meters away—is an awe-inspiring and deeply moving experience. Once contact is made, you are allowed up to one full hour with the gorillas, a period that passes all too quickly in the presence of such gentle and intelligent creatures.
Following the trek, return to the lodge for a late lunch and a well-earned rest. The afternoon is yours to relax—perhaps with a warm shower, a quiet drink on your veranda, or simply reflecting on the profound encounter in the forest.
As evening falls, enjoy a fireside dinner back at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, surrounded by the calm of the Virunga foothills. The stories of the day, shared under the stars, are likely to stay with you for years to come.

Day Three: Second Gorilla Trekking Experience & Drive to Kigali.
After an early breakfast, return once more to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for your second gorilla trekking adventure—this time visiting a different habituated gorilla family. Tracking a new group offers a fresh perspective and allows for a broader understanding of gorilla behavior, social dynamics, and group structure. For photography enthusiasts, it’s also an opportunity to capture more varied scenes in the ever-changing light and mist of the forest.
While gorilla trekking in Rwanda is considered relatively accessible, the experience still requires several hours of hiking through thick vegetation and uneven terrain. The trek may last anywhere from three to six hours, depending on the gorillas’ location, and culminates once again in a precious hour spent in close proximity to these magnificent creatures. No two treks are the same, making this second encounter just as thrilling and rewarding as the first.
After your time in the forest, enjoy a picnic lunch in the foothills of the Virunga Mountains, a fitting way to soak in the last views of this remarkable wilderness. You’ll then begin your drive back to Kigali, traveling at a relaxed pace through Rwanda’s pastoral countryside and hillside villages.
Arriving in Kigali by late afternoon or early evening, you’ll check in at the historic Hotel Mille Collines, known for its central location and rich cultural legacy. Settle into your room and enjoy a well-deserved dinner in the hotel’s elegant restaurant, reflecting on two unforgettable days with the mountain gorillas.

Day Four: Cultural Exploration & Departure
Following your final breakfast in Rwanda, the morning offers time to explore a deeper layer of the country’s cultural and historical identity. Depending on your interests and timing, you may choose between the two meaningful experiences.
One option is a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a powerful and thoughtfully curated site honoring the victims of the 1994 genocide. Through personal testimonies, photographs, and historical exhibits, the memorial offers a moving and educational perspective on Rwanda’s tragic past—and the country’s remarkable journey of healing and unity. It is a deeply emotional but essential visit that adds profound context to your time in Rwanda.
Alternatively, for a more immersive cultural experience, you may opt to visit the Iby’iwacu Cultural Village, now known as the Gorilla Guardians Village, where local communities share traditional Rwandan customs, dance, storytelling, and daily life practices. This initiative supports conservation through cultural tourism, offering travelers a respectful glimpse into the heritage of the people who live near the national parks.
After your chosen excursion, your guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport, assisting with check-in for your outbound flight. As your journey comes to a close, take with you not only unforgettable wildlife encounters, but also a deeper appreciation for Rwanda’s resilience, beauty, and cultural richness.
