There’s no enclosure here, no barrier; instead, you’re watching a family group move through dense montane forest, largely unbothered by the small cluster of humans observing them. Mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) rank among the rarest great apes alive, restricted to two regions: the Virunga Massif, which spans Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the isolated Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in southwestern Uganda. Bwindi alone shelters roughly half of the planet’s remaining mountain gorilla population, while the other half is spread across the Virunga volcanoes, divided among Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Virunga National Park in Congo. The trek itself is heavily regulated, physically taxing, and costly compared to other safari experiences in the region – yet it remains, without question, one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters the world has to offer.

About Gorilla Trekking In Bwindi
Bwindi’s permit pricing has recently changed. As of the current 2026 tariff cycle, Uganda’s gorilla permit costs $800 per person for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, and $500 for citizens of other African countries, a structure that has been in place since mid-2024. In February 2026, the Uganda Wildlife Authority introduced a notable change: a discounted low-season rate of $600 for foreign non-residents and $500 for foreign residents during April, May and November, the traditionally quieter, wetter months – welcome news for anyone planning budget gorilla safaris without sacrificing the core experience. There have also been booking changes worth knowing about: foreign visitors must now book through licensed Ugandan tour operators, and the old seven-day reservation hold has been eliminated, meaning full payment is now required at the time of booking. For travelers wanting a deeper experience, the gorilla habituation permit in Rushaga costs $1,500 and allows four hours with a gorilla family still undergoing habituation, though this is scheduled to rise further, with the fee increasing from $1,500 to $1,800 for foreign non-residents effective July 1, 2026.
Bwindi is the crown jewel of gorilla safaris in Uganda. This is ancient rainforest, one of the few in Africa to have survived the last Ice Age, and its density of tangled vines, towering hardwoods, and thick undergrowth explains its name. The park is split into four trekking sectors, each with its own habituated gorilla families and its own character:
- Buhoma, in the north, is the most accessible from Entebbe and Kampala, and home to some of the longest-habituated, most reliably visible families — a popular starting point for first-time visitors researching gorilla safaris in Uganda.
- Ruhija, in the east, sits at the highest elevation, often shrouded in cloud, with dramatic views over the forest canopy.
- Rushaga, in the south, has the largest concentration of habituated families and borders Rwanda. It’s also the exclusive site for Bwindi’s four-hour gorilla habituation experience, which lets visitors join researchers observing a family still being acclimatized to human presence rather than a fully habituated one.
- Nkuringo, also in the south, is quieter and known for steep, physically tougher trails, often favored by travelers looking for more customised safaris in Uganda off the well-trodden circuit.
Only 160 standard trekking permits and 8 habituation permits are available each day across Bwindi and Mgahinga combined, and demand routinely outstrips supply in peak months (June – September and December – February), so booking six to twelve months ahead is standard advice – whether you’re arranging budget gorilla safaris through a group departure or working with an operator on fully customised safaris in Uganda built around your dates and sector preference.

Rwanda may be best known for gorilla trekking tours, but it's one of Africa's most rewarding birding destinations, with over 700 species packed into a compact, well-connected landscape.
Treks typically begin with a briefing at a park office around 7 or 8 a.m., after which small groups of up to eight trekkers, accompanied by armed rangers and trackers, set off into the forest. Trackers who have gone ahead at dawn radio back a family’s location, and the hike itself can take anywhere from one to eight hours round-trip depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight. Once found, visitors get a strictly enforced one hour with the family, watching silverbacks, mothers with infants, and juveniles at close range.
