The local name though for this park is “Kabalega national park”.
The park is bisected by the mighty River Nile, from east to west for a distance of about 115 kilometers making the southern and the northern sectors. It also offers immense concentrations of Hippos, as well as Uganda’s largest population of Crocodiles and also the region’s most impressive water falls, where the name of the park comes from.

The Chimpanzees in this sector of the forest are fully habituated, used to human presence and readily available for trekking when ever you feel like.
Karuma Falls:
These are located on the Eastern boarder of Murchison falls National Park (the largest reserve in Uganda). They are found on the Victoria Nile and they are among the most impressive tourist attractions in Uganda. The name Karuma falls was derived from a belief of a great spirit “Karuma” that positioned the stones which break the waters of the river that bring about these falls. Karuma falls also is comprised of good and beautiful rock formations to mention just a few.
Paraa:
The word Paraa is a local name from the Luo culture that means “home of hippos”. Paraa is one of the great areas of interest when it comes to visiting Murchison falls national park. This is also where the park headquarters are found, hence being the center of most of the tourist activities. When we talk about it being a home of hippos, be sure to find plenty of them there. The boat cruises upstream towards the bottom of the falls as well as that taking you down stream to the Delta begins from here.

Accessibility;
By road:
It takes about 300kms via Kampala – Masindi route to get to Paraa, Murchison falls National Park. Lately the petroleum exploration was authorized in the park by the Government. This was triggered by the discovery of petroleum along the Albertine Rift, where Murchison falls national park lies. So due to that the exploration companies constructed a paved high way road cutting through the park.
The high way road runs from south of the park at Kichombanyobo gate to Pakwach at Tangi gate. Also a high way bridge was constructed at Paraa across the Mighty River Nile, connecting the southern sector to the northern sector of the park. The construction of this road brought about easy access to the park and reduced the time one uses traversing from one side to another.
